Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) is the fire and rescue authority for the County of Cumbria, located in the northwest of England. The service was established in 1974 as part of a Local Government reorganisation that saw the number of fire brigades in the UK drop from 152 to 52. Before the 1974 reorganisation, fire cover for the region was provided by several independent brigades, including Cumberland, Westmorland, Carlisle and Barrow, along with stations in Lancashire and Yorkshire.

The service currently operates 38 fire stations, 6 of which are full-time, 2 are day crewed, and 30 are retained. Because it covers a largely rural area, some of its retained stations have very low incident numbers. In 2023 the service responded to over 5,000 incidents.
