The 20th century saw a wide range of British manufacturers building fire appliances, but there was a gradual decline in the 1980s and 1990s and when DENNIS ceased production in 2007, it marked the end of UK-built fire trucks. Modern fire appliances are now manufactured on European chassis from Volvo, Scania, Mercedes, and Iveco. The Dutch company DAF Trucks produces vehicles at its factory in Lancashire, and a small number of these are used as fire appliances in the UK. Coachbuilding, the process of converting the truck chassis into a fire appliance, is still carried out in the UK by several firms such as Angloco, Emergency One, and WH Bence.
