Greater Manchester County Fire Service was established in 1974 as the statutory fire service for the Greater Manchester area in North West England. In 2004, the service was renamed Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service following the 2004 Fire & Rescue Services Act, which saw a statutory expansion of responsibility. It is England's second busiest fire service and provides fire and rescue coverage to over 2.8 million residents.
The service operates from 41 fire stations, 36 of which are full-time and 6 of which are day-crewed. During the 2023/24 reporting year, it responded to over 49,000 emergency calls.
