Mercedes-Benz has been manufacturing trucks since 1926, and now part of Daimler Trucks, has become the world's largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles. They have produced fire appliances in Europe since the 1940s and entered the UK market in the 1990s They provide a range of appliance types, from front-line pumps based on the Atego chassis (and favoured by the London Fire Brigade) to a range of special appliances based on various vehicles including the lightweight Sprinter van which serves in many roles to heavier Actros and Econic models. The Unimog, with its extreme all-terrain capabilities, also serves with a number of brigades where it is used for off-road rescue and fighting wildfires.
