VOLVO

Volvo Trucks is a Swedish vehicle manufacturing company founded in 1927. They produced their first Fire Appliance in 1928 but only entered the UK market in the mid-1980s when the FL6 Series was introduced. Since then, Volvo has become the predominant supplier to the UK Fire Service, supplying Water Tenders, Aerials and specialist appliances to many brigades. Most Volvo appliances are built on the FL cab and chassis (FL= Forward control Low-level cab) with some heavier machines, such as aerial platforms or water carriers, using the larger FM chassis (FM= Forward control Medium height cab). Like most truck manufacturers, Volvo does not build the bodywork for its Fire appliances; this is done by specialists such as Angloco, Emergency One or WH Bence. Pictured below are a selection of Volvo appliances from a number of UK brigades.
